Your Opinion: Honoring veterans for their "great example'

Dear Editor:

On Aug. 26 I had the honor and pleasure of attending the Mid-MO Honor Flight homecoming in Columbia to cheer for my good friend, John Yovich. This was my first time attending an Honor Flight event and I found the experience altogether humbling.

Watching the faces of those 70-plus US veterans as their names were called and they walked a red carpet in their honor is something I will never forget. They were finishing a 24 hour non-stop event, and I'd expected to see some exhausted faces.

Yet every one of them beamed as they heard the cheers from the crowd. After the veterans were introduced, the names were read of two veterans who passed away before they had the chance to go on the Honor Flight. The cheers that followed were likely loud enough to reach them in heaven.

I am reminded of a quote from Benjamin Disraeli: "The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example."

I would encourage everyone to take an evening and attend one of these events. If nothing else, we can thank the veterans we know and encounter every day for the service they've given our country.
