BizBeat: The Spot to close in November

"It was a good run," said Melissa Schieferdecker, co-owner of The Spot.

The downtown Jefferson City bar and music hot spot will be closing its doors at the end of November after nearly 5 years in business.

Schieferdecker and business partners, husband Ron, and her father Phil Kalaf, set out to create a certain atmosphere, one in which all were welcome, local talent was showcased, and the cost was reasonable. Schieferdecker said the business never charged a cover unless they were having a special show for charity.

"We can proudly say that we have accomplished exactly what we set out to do," she said.

So it was with a "heavy heart" that The Spot announced its anticipated closing.

"The business just hasn't been there the way it was. I wouldn't want to change a thing," Schieferdecker said of her business practices.

The mostly family-run bar will close Nov. 30 after the busy Thanksgiving weekend. Until that time, the beverages will flow and bands will continue to perform. To start out their final month, The Spot will host an '80s video dance party and Halloween party featuring the Cherry Pistols.
