Former Mid-Missouri man awarded Emmy

Bill Groom, formerly of California, Mo., won his second consecutive Emmy for production designer for “Boarkwalk Empire” on HBO.

The series chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson, ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. Written by Terence Winter, the show stars Stephen Graham, Steve Buscemi and Kelly Macdonald.

Groom attended school in California until fifth grade and graduated from Durant High School in Oklahoma. He received a degree in art and a master’s degree from Tulane University.

He taught for four years at Stoney Brook College in Long Island, N.Y, and then began set design for television and movies. Some credits include: “Ishtar”; “A League of Their Own”; “The Preacher’s Wife”; and “It Could Happen to You.”

Groom also worked on “Saturday Night Live” for several years.

His mother, Betty Groom, still lives in California.
