Two Lady Jays, Lady Crusaders advance to state golf

Two Jefferson City Lady Jays and two Helias Lady Crusaders will be competing in the state golf championships thanks to their sectional results Monday.

The local golfers advanced after the single-round Class 2 Sectional 2 meet held at the par-70 Innsbrook Resort Golf Course in Innsbrook. The top two teams and top 12 individuals not on those teams advance to state.

Jefferson City's Brooke Thompson was the top local qualifier, as she shot an 85 to finish seventh in the individual race.

Thompson's teammate, Hope Watson, and Helias' Lauren Plunkett tied for 10th by carding 87s. Also advancing was Jenna Kosmatka of the Lady Crusaders, as she posted a 90 to tie for 13th.

Parkway West won the team title with a 337, well in front of Lafayette: Wildwood, which shot 373. The Lady Jays were third in the team race with a 386.

The two-day Class 2 state tournament will begin Monday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club.

Five area girls qualified for the Class 1 state championships with their finishes at the sectional meet Monday.

Competing at the par-72 Crescent Farms Golf Course in Crescent, School of the Osage's Taylor Hayes was the best area finisher, coming in third with a 77.

Also qualifying for state were Russellville's Mikala Jungmeyer (tied for 11th, 87), Southern Boone's Hannah Muroski (16th, 89), Russellville's Kelsey Schrimpf (17th, 92) and New Bloomfield's Brooke Kelley (18th, 93).

John Burroughs won the team title with a 346 and MICDS also advanced with a 354. Russellville was fifth with a 432.

The Class 1 state championships will begin Monday at the Sedalia Country Club.
