Dowden wins another district tennis title

Lady Jays' Smith-Hoogveld team claims crown

CAMDENTON, Mo. - Helias tennis player Ashley Dowden is 2-for-2, as the sophomore won her second straight district individual title Saturday.

Dowden picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against a player from Waynesville, a 6-0, 6-1 win against a player from Rolla and a 6-1, 6-1 victory against a player from Camdenton. Dowden will compete in the sectional tournament Wednesday in Camdenton.

Mary Conley also competed for Helias in the tournament, going 1-1. Conley picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory against a player from Smith-Cotton. She lost 4-6, 7-5, 3-6 to a player from Camdenton.

In doubles action the Helias team of Casey Clogston and Abbey Verslues took third place. They defeated a team from Smith Cotton (6-1, 6-0), lost to Jefferson City's Kelly Raithel and Haley Snellen (6-1, 6-2) before defeating a team from Rolla (6-2, 6-0).

Becca Shelton and Lauren Highfill went 1-1 in the tournament. They defeated a team from Smith-Cotton (6-0, 6-0) and lost its second match 6-1, 6-1.

A pair of Jefferson City Lady Jays are moving on in doubles action.

Paige Smith and Eden Hoogveld won the district doubles tournament Saturday.

It was an all Jefferson City final as Smith and Hoogveld took down teammates Raithel and Snellen (6-1, 6-1) in the finals.

They will compete in the sectional tournament Wednesday in Camdenton.

A pair of Lady Jays competed in the individual portion of the tournament. Maddi Brown lost her match to a player from Waynesville (4-6, 7-5, 0-6). Athira Nambiar defeated a player from Waynesville (6-0, 6-3) and lost to a player from Rolla (3-6, 2-6).
