2 JC warning sirens not working

Two outdoor warning sirens on opposite sides of Jefferson City aren't working, and officials aren't sure how long they'll be down.

The sirens are located on Militia Drive, near the National Guard's Ike Skelton Training Site, and on Missouri 179 north of Industrial Drive, next to the new fire station construction site.

Jefferson City Police Capt. Doug Shoemaker said, in a news release, that both sirens "had severe damage consistent with a lightning strike."

Both sirens failed to work during the Oct. 3 monthly test, and the cause was determined this week, after an inspection by Outdoor Warning Consulting - the vendor who sold the sirens to the city.

Shoemaker said officials think both sirens were damaged during a thunderstorm on September 8, three days after the last siren test was conducted.
