The Jefferson City tennis team made it two in a row Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Jays won their second straight district title with a 5-1 victory against Helias at Washington Park. It's the first back-to-back district titles for the Lady Jays since the mid-1990s.

"I was pleased with the way all of our girls played," Jefferson City head coach John Blosser said. "Each one of them had a plan."

Paige Smith got things going for the Lady Jays with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Mary Conley; Eden Hoogveld defeated Abbey Verslues 6-1, 6-1; Kirsten Schmidt beat Lauren Highfill 6-3, 6-2; Athira Nambiar beat Becca Shelton 6-1, 6-3; Haley Snellen beat Casey Clogston 6-4, 6-0.

Ashley Dowden was Helias' lone winner with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Kelly Raithel.

Blosser said this was as good as the Lady Jays have played all season. Jefferson City won the regular-season match against Helias 6-3, and Blosser said it could have been closer than that.

"We played a real tough schedule and I think that helped prepare our girls for the competition," Blosser said.

Helias finished the season at 13-2. Its only two losses were to Jefferson City.

"We improved a lot from last year," Helias coach Margaret Shimkus said.

The Lady Jays are back in action in the district singles tournament Saturday in Camdenton. The team sectional and quarterfinal rounds will take place Saturday.
