Trash rates going up

Jefferson City customers of Allied Waste will see a 3 percent rate hike, starting with their November invoices.

In a news release issued Monday, company officials said residents with a 64-gallon waste cart will see their cost of service increase by $6.23 per year. The cost of other residential carts will increase 3 percent as well.

The price increased is tied to the consumer price index for water, sewer and trash collection, which is mandated by the U.S. Department of Labor for a 4.4 percent increase.

However, the release stated, due to the current economic conditions and at the request of Mayor Eric Struemph, Allied declined to seek the full increase.
