Lady Jays win golf title

COLUMBIA - The Jefferson City Lady Jays captured a district golf championship Monday, breaking a tie with the Rock Bridge Bruins on the score of each team's fifth golfer.

Both the Lady Jays and Bruins ended up with a four-player team score of 352 in the Class 2 District 4 Tournament at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. But the Lady Jays' fifth golfer, Blair Michael, tied for 23rd with a score of 104, better than Rock Bridge's Cara Wilfong, who tied for 32nd with a 108.

Leading the way for Jefferson City was Brooke Thompson, who finished second with an 80, one shot back of Helias' Jenna Kosmatka.

Also for Jefferson City, Hope Watson tied for seventh with an 86, Ashlee Morrison tied for ninth with an 87 and Ellie Severance was 19th with a 99.

For Helias, Lauren Plunkett was 13th (90), Hanna Berendzen was 20th (100) and Ashten Lorts was 36th (110).

The top two teams and top 15 individuals not on those teams will advance to the sectional tournament, which will be held Monday at Insbrook Resort Golf Course in St. Charles.

The Russellville Lady Indians will be moving on to the sectional round after finishing second in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament at Redfield Golf Club in Eugene.

St. Dominic won the team race with a 373, while Russellville was next at 390. Among other area schools, California was third (407), School of the Osage was fourth (408), Southern Boone was sixth (425), New Bloomfield was seventh (435) and Eugene was eighth (442).

The top finisher for Russellville was Mikala Jungmeyer, who finished third (82). The others advancing to the sectional tournament for the Lady Indians are Kelsey Schrimpf (fourth, 84), Madison Oliver (24th, 111), Chantz Grellner (tied for 27th, 113) and Madilyn Bungart (tied for 33rd, 116).

Other area players who will be competing as individuals at the sectional meet are New Bloomfield's Brooke Kelly (tied for fifth, 88), Southern Boone's Hannah Muroski (tied for fifth, 88), New Bloomfield's Ashley Kelley (tied for ninth, 96), California's Haley Goans (ninth, 96), Southern Boone's Ashtyn McCloud (11th, 98) and California's Sophie Brant (13th, 100).

The sectional tournament will be held Monday at Crescent Farms Golf Course in St. Louis.
