Jefferson City, Helias to meet for tennis crown

It's going to be a Capital City championship match of the Class 2 District 9 Tennis Tournament.

The title match will see the top-seeded Jefferson City Lady Jays take on the second-seeded Helias Lady Crusaders after semifinal wins for both Tuesday at Washington Park.

The Helias Lady Crusaders started the day by making quick work of Rolla, winning 5-0.

Winners for Helias were Ashley Dowden (6-1, 6-2), Mary Conley (6-4, 6-4), Abbi Verslues (6-2, 6-1), Lauren Highfill (6-1, 6-1) and Casey Clogston (6-1, 6-1). Becca Shelton was winning her match 7-5, 5-3 when it was called after Helias had already won the necessary five matches to advance.

Jefferson City, meanwhile, handed Camdenton a 5-0 defeat.

Singles winners for the Lady Jays (15-5) were Kelly Raithel (6-1, 6-0), Paige Smith (6-0, 6-0), Eden Hoogveld (6-0, 6-1), Kirsten Schmidt (6-2, 6-1) and Haley Snellen (6-0, 6-0). Athira Nambiar was leading 7-5, 5-2 when her match was halted.

The title match is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Park.
