Jays take down nationally ranked team in soccer

ST. LOUIS - The Jefferson City Jays captured consolation honors Saturday in their Gateway City Soccer Classic pool with a 2-0 victory against nationally ranked Washburn (Kan.) Rural.

Mason Vonderhaar scored off an assist by Jordan Carron for the Jays. The other goal came on a penalty kick by Aaron Crane after Marcus Woodruff was fouled in the box.

Alex Hilke got the shutout in goal for the Jays (10-2), who will host Battle on Tuesday.

Washburn Rural, located in Topeka, is ranked No. 16 in the country in the latest Student Sports Fab 50 and is the defending Class 6 state champion in Kansas.
