Your Opinion: Military junta may be needed

Many moons ago there were two major newspapers in St. Louis. One that has since been consigned to the ages, the Globe Democrat, had a political columnist Roscoe Drummond who asked his readers to send in suggestions on how to improve government.

A young idealist I suggested that politicians for high office have qualifications like most other jobs have; that they be selected from Ph.D.s in economics, history, political science, social studies or related fields. At that time I was unaware of the Chinese Manchu dynasties reliance on scholars. That was a great historical fiasco.

One of the English world's great thinkers Samuel Johnson wrote about the deficiencies of leaders who might have risen from infighting of the gutters. One of our current well-respected political thinkers, Patrick Buchanan, wrote a book "A Republic, not a democracy," which probably echoed the thinking of our Founding Fathers and most people who do not have the time or means to study the complex issues of government.

If the present parties seemingly cannot run the government in a sensible manner that does not risk economic or military disaster we will need a military junta.

A military junta could manage the country without infringing on the Bill of Rights or our highly partisan and directed Supreme Count.

The law could stipulate that all major issues be voted on in a regularly scheduled referendum. The military function to be the maintenance of state and local law oversight
