New commander assigned to USS Jefferson City

Cmdr. John Droghan relieved Cmdr. Brian Dickson as commanding officer of the USS Jefferson City (SSN-759) at a recent pier-side ceremony on Naval Base Point Loma.

Guest speaker at the event was Capt. Thomas Ishee, Commander, Submarine Squadron 11.

Under Dickson's command, the submarine conducted operations in a wide range of environments demonstrating the submarine force's ability to provide the U.S. combatant commanders highly capable, multi-mission platforms to support both the maritime strategy and national security objectives. The submarine traveled more than 62,000 nautical miles during his command.

Droghan is a native of Carson City, Nev., and began his Navy career in 1986 as an enlisted machinist's mate. He was selected to participate in the nuclear enlisted commissioning program in 1993 and attended Auburn University.

He graduated with distinction in 1996 with a bachelor's of science degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned via Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla.
