On a cold night in Eugene, several dozen area residents showed up for a hot Thanksgiving meal, courtesy of Eugene Christian Church.

It was the second year the non-denominational church offered the free meal to the community. Last year, it served about 175 people - more people than live in Eugene, which disincorporated some 15 years ago.

"God has given us a lot of things to be thankful for, and we just wanted to return some of the blessings he has bestowed upon us, to the community and some of the people who are less fortunate," said the Rev. Matt Boughan, the church's minister.

The meal included turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and various other sides, plus a variety of cakes, pies and cookies. The church bought some of the food for the meal and had some donated, Boughan said.

Neta Meyer, who lives in Jefferson City attended the event. A former Brazito resident for three decades, the area is home to her.

"We go to church here and have all been friends for years," Meyer said, sitting among a group of friends at one table. "We just like to get together and catch up."
