MIAA places 9 Blue Tigers on football squad
Wednesday, November 20, 2013
The 14 football coaches in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association took notice of Lincoln’s better-than-expected season.
Nine Blue Tigers earned All-MIAA honors from the league, it was announced Tuesday.
Senior running back Morris Henderson headlined Lincoln’s honorees with a second-team selection.
Center J.J. Johnson and linebacker Kendrick Causey were third-team selections while quarterback Jacob Morris, offensive tackles Roberto Limon and Jarve Dean, offensive guards Justin Campbell and Cesar Estrada and cornerback Markuice Savage all made the honorable mention list.
Henderson rushed for 1,266 yards, breaking legendary Lincoln running back Leo Lewis’ 1952 record of 1,239. Henderson averaged 6.8 yards per carry, which also surpasses Lewis’ 1952 mark of 5.9. In addition to his rushing total, which ranked 19th in all of NCAA Division II, Henderson racked up 2,257 all-purpose yards, the second-most in the MIAA and the sixth-most in the country.
Johnson led one of the most successful offensive lines in Lincoln history. Johnson, along with linemates Limon, Estrada, Campbell and Dean, blocked for 4,917 yards of total offense, crushing the old single-season record of 3,734 that was set last season. The quintet paved the way for 2,529 rushing yards, 2,388 passing yards and 42 offensive touchdowns.
Causey was named to the all-league third team after finishing third in the conference in total tackles, making 116 takedowns over the course of the 11-game season. Causey posted a team-best 51 solo tackles while assisting on 65 others and finished with 3.5 tackles for loss.
Morris had arguably the most prolific passing season in Lincoln history, breaking five single-season records, one career record and one single-game mark while tying four other single-game records. Morris became the first Lincoln quarterback to ever throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season, finishing the 2013 campaign with 2,076, and ended the year with a program-record 2,721 yards of total offense. Both totals broke Lincoln season records held by Steve Bohlken, who threw for 1,939 yards and compiled 2,194 yards of offense in 1988.
Lincoln’s final honoree, Savage, was selected All-MIAA honorable mention for the second consecutive season. Savage finished second on the team with 50 solo tackles and 77 total takedowns. He also intercepted three passes, including two in the win against Southwest Baptist, and finished with a team-best 10 passes defended.
