Commission recommends minor changes to downtown parking

Some time limits for parking downtown may soon be elongated, pending approval form the Jefferson City Council.

At the Transportation and Traffic Commission meeting Wednesday, commissioners approved a series of staff recommended changes to parking in the downtown areas. Operations Division Director Britt Smith said the minor changes are a result of a review of the city’s parking regulations. Smith said a vast majority of the changes are simple clean up, matching city code to practice.

Smith said the only significant change would be changing one hour parking restirctions downtown to a two-hour limit, which would put the spaces in line with a majority of the downtown area. Smith said the city receives a lot of complaints about the one hour limit from people who say one hour is not enough time to complete business in offices and shops downtown.

“The result is those spaces are underutilized,” Smith said.

Commission member and former public works director Roger Schwartze noted the changes would not effect anyone in the downtown residential parking program.
