Aldon Smith enters plea

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home last year.

Deputy District Attorney Brian Buckelew said the 24-year-old San Jose resident appeared Tuesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court with his lawyer and parents.

The charges stem from a June 2012 party at Smith's home. Investigators said several shots were fired, two partygoers were injured and Smith was stabbed. In the subsequent investigation, prosecutors said detectives found five unregistered weapons in Smith's house, including two Bushmaster rifles and an Armalite AR-10T. They said those are assault weapons illegal to possess under California law.

Smith's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15.
