JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri's Democratic House leader says a lawmaker from the St. Louis area plans to resign following charges of theft and campaign finance violations.
House Minority Leader Jake Hummel said Wednesday that Rep. Steve Webb told him he intends to resign because of the charges.
Court documents show Webb was charged with felony stealing by deceit. The charge alleges Webb solicited a $3,000 contribution he said would be used for a reception in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus. Webb is accused of transferring the money to himself.
The Democrat from St. Louis County also faces seven misdemeanor charges for alleged campaign finance violations.
Webb had no immediate comment.
Hummel said that using political donations for personal expenditures cannot be tolerated, and it is appropriate for Webb to resign.
