Area athletes aim for strong finish at state track

If the seeds are to be believed, there could be several state medals heading the way of area track and field athletes.

The Class 3-4 Track and Field Championships, set for today and Saturday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, boast 12 area individuals in 19 events and two relay teams.

And they're not just in the events, they're high seeds in the event.

Case in point: Eldon's Sara Rhine.

Rhine will compete in the Class 3 girls high jump and long jump, and she enters as the top seed in both of them based on last week's performance at sectionals.

Then there's California's Sydney Deeken.

Competing in the Class 3 girls portion of the meet, Deeken will take part in three events and is seeded no lower than fourth in any of them. She's seeded first in the triple jump, third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump.

One other area performer comes in as the No. 1 seed, as Southern Boone's Landon Bartel has the best mark in the Class 3 boys high jump.

That's just one of four events for Bartel this weekend, as he'll also compete in the long jump (seeded eighth), 110-meter hurdles (fifth) and triple jump (12th).

The only other area athlete competing in more than one event is School of the School of the Osage's Robbie Mueller, who will take part in the Class 3 boys 100- and 400-meter dashes.

Competing in one event each among the Class 3 boys are Osage's Donald Huddlemeyer and Tristan Hensley, Eldon's Sheyne Stafford, Southern Boone's David Holland and California's Adam Burkett.

Eldon 4x100-meter relay team and Osage's 4x800 squad will also compete.

Taking part in one event each in the Class 3 girls portion are California's Leah Korenberg and Lizzy Kirby and Osage's Lacy Cotton.
