Cole County roads to be resurfaced

Commissioners award contract for asphalt work

The Cole County Commission has approved a bid from Jefferson Asphalt for the annual asphalt overlay program for roads around the county.

Jefferson had the lone bid of $854,199.33, which is below the engineers' estimate of $873,004.

Public works officials said the price was abut a half-a-percent higher than last year.

The money for this work comes from the county's half-cent capital improvement sales tax.

County roads that will be getting worked on this year include:

• Old Stage Road

• Bennington Lane

• Country View Drive

• Country View Court

• Sheperd Hills Road

• Murphy Ford Road

• Scruggs Station Road

• Rumsey Lane

• King Ridge Road

• Valley View Drive

• Rainbow Hills Road

• Bourbon Street

• Gateway Drive

• Brookview Drive

In Lohman, work will be done on Front Street and Cynthia Street.

In Russellville, work will be done on Smith Street and Johnston Street.

For choosing roads, the public works department uses a rating system that ranks roads based on their conditions.

They also try to coordinate with other projects to be cost effective.

Asphalt overlays are normally done on the roads in poor condition.

For better roads, the department is doing more preventive maintenance like chip seals, crack sealing and other types of seal coats to extend the pavement life.

The work on these roads will be done this summer and fall.
