Ruff's goal leads Lady Jays to win

BLUE SPRINGS - It was the type of game you'd expect featuring two teams with outstanding defenses.

But Tuesday night, Jefferson City's was a little better.

Kaley Ruff of the Lady Jays scored midway through the second half to account for the lone goal in Jefferson City's 1-0 victory against the Blue Springs South Jaguars in Class 3 sectional action.

"They're stingy and very physical, it was definitely a battle," Lady Jays coach Matt Stacey said.

With the win, the Lady Jays (17-3-1) advance to Saturday's quarterfinal against either Nixa (21-3) or Kickapoo (10-12) at the 179 Soccer Park. Nixa and Kickapoo will play their sectional tonight.

Game time is 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ruff's goal came on a free kick from just outside the box.

"Kaley just set it down and took it," Stacey said. "Boom, back of the net."

Becca Sturgess got her 10th shutout of the season in goal for the Lady Jays.

"She made some huge saves," Stacey said. "She played very, very well and so did the defense in front of her."

This will be the third trip to the quarterfinals in the history of the Lady Jays program. But they've never advanced to the Final Four.

"One more to go to make history," Stacey said.

The Class 3 Final Four will be played May 31 and June 1 in Blue Springs.

Blue Springs South ends its season at 12-6-1.
