All-region honors for LU track

As the Lincoln track and field teams prepare for nationals later this week in Pueblo, Colo., several members received all-region honors Monday.

A total of 22 Blue Tigers were named to the all-central region team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The women's squad had 16 athletes earn 32 honors, the second-most of any program in the country.

Twishana Williams, Latoya King, Michelle Cumberbatch, Yanique Haye, Donna-Lee Hylton, Juneille Barker, Lovan Palmer, Janae Johnson, Yanique Ellington, Cardine Copeland, Monique Thompson and Anna-Kay James all were honored for track events.

On the field side Sheri Kaye Campbell, Daniele Newman, Nickeisha Beaumont and Jonelle Campbell were honored.

Six Blue Tiger men were honored including Sabiel Anderson, Michael Ashley, Romel Lewis, Jermaine Blake, Tyrone Hawkins and Devin Hill. Lincoln had the most honorees of any school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Both squads will compete in the Division II National Championships beginning Thursday.

Brent Vogel of Central Missouri received all-central region honors in the decathlon and 4x400-meter relay. Vogel (Helias High School) won the decathlon at the 2011 Outdoor National Championships and the heptathlon at the 2012 indoor championships.

Central Missouri's Erin Alewine (Jefferson City High School) was also honored, taking home honors in the heptathlon.

Alewine, who won the national championship in the indoor pentathlon earlier this year, will miss the outdoor championships due to injury.
