Guardsmen assist car accident victim

Three Missouri National Guard soldiers assisted a woman and emergency response crews during a single-vehicle accident May 7 on U.S. 50 Business Highway in Apache Flats.

The three guardsmen - Sgt. 1st Class Scott Seib, Sgt. Tim Hutinger and Spc. Shane Zimmer - assisted the woman who suffered a seizure while driving her car, then directed emergency responders to the accident.

"We ran down there, and Zimmer and two others ran to the car," Seib said. "We turned the car off and held the woman until the seizure was over. We just did what anyone else would have done."

The three men were participating in a softball game at Jefferson City's Binder Park when they heard the wreck. According to the accident report, the woman suffered a seizure and drove into a car in the Dudley's restaurant parking lot. Her vehicle deflected off the road into the creek.

Zimmer and others ran across the outfield and hopped two fences to get to the vehicle. Zimmer's friend Bryan Libbert broke the back window in order to climb in and shut off the vehicle. The men held her until the seizure subsided.

The woman was taken to the hospital and was released that night.

"All that matters is that she was checked out of the hospital with a clean bill of health and not a scratch on her," said Zimmer. "We just did what was right."
