Mo. bill lets state workers carry guns in car

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - State employees in Missouri could keep firearms in their vehicles on state property under a bill sent to Gov. Jay Nixon.

The measure would allow state workers to have a firearm in a car if the vehicle is locked and the gun is not in plain sight.

The bill would also bar local governments from holding gun "buy-back" programs unless the events are authorized by a local ordinance. Otherwise, counties or municipalities would have to offer something of value to a person in exchange for the firearm.

Lawmakers added an amendment saying the Legislature condemns the use of illegal and stolen firearms.

The House gave the bill final approval Friday on a vote of 125-27.
