Rooney asks for transfer

MANCHESTER, England — Alex Ferguson left Wayne Rooney out of Manchester United’s squad for the manager’s final game at Old Trafford on Sunday and said the forward wasn’t ready to play after handing in a transfer request.

“I don’t think Wayne Rooney was keen to play, simply because he’s asked for a transfer,” Ferguson said after the match. “But we won’t sell him.”

Rooney was not even included on the substitutes’ bench for the Premier League match against Swansea, a 2-1 win that served as a home farewell for Ferguson and midfielder Paul Scholes.
