LEXINGTON (AP) - Wentworth Military Academy President William W. Sellers says he will resign, effective after the academy's graduation May 18.
Sellers is the great-great-great grandson of the academy's founder, Stephen G. Wentworth. The academy in Lexington has been led by four generations of the Sellers family.
William Sellers became president of the academy in 2008. The school said in a news release that enrollment grew from 155 cadets to 334 full-time students on campus during his tenure. Commuter and online students also are at record highs.
Wentworth also increased its fundraising by 33 percent under Sellers, allowing the school to invest over $1 million in facilities upgrades. And the school restarted its college athletic program in 2011.
The academy is a private co-educational military high school and two-year college.
