Commission OKs new location for local academy

Lighthouse Preparatory Academy may have found a new home.

At the Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Thursday, commissioners approved an amended preliminary PUD plan for 216 El Mercado Plaza, where officials plan to convert the vacant building to be the home of the private school.

Andy Beshuk, representing Lighthouse, said the school is at capacity at its current facility on Emerald Lane.

"We are a growing school," Beshuk said.

Mike Bates, with Central Missouri Professional Services, said the building on Mercado at one point was a state building, but has been vacant for some time. Bates said it was good to see there is an adaptive reuse for the building.

"This is another example of our shrinking state government," Bates said.

The request will go to the full City Council where a public hearing will be held June 17.

In other business, the commission also approved a final subdivision plat for Trolley Square subdivision, which is comprised of two property tracts in the 700 block of East High Street. Donna Deetz, property owner, said the intent is to combine the two tracts into one lot to be used as a single residential property.
