When owner goes to Mo. jail, pets still cared for

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Dog owners know that their canines will stand by them, no matter what they do.

The law isn't always so forgiving. But when people are put in jail, police in southeast Missouri make sure their dogs are taken care of.

The Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/106asGT ) reports police agencies in the region take a variety of steps to ensure the care of dogs and other pets after their owners are put behind bars.

Most contact relatives to pick up the animals. If none are available, the pets are typically taken to shelters or placed with veterinarians who care for them until a permanent home is found.

Perry County Sheriff Gary Schaaf says his officers might let animals stay with owners who are booked and released on minor offenses.
