KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Three runs in the first inning were too much for the Missouri baseball team to overcome.
The Tigers were shutout in a 4-0 loss to Tennessee in the series-opener Friday.
The Volunteers plated three runs in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring single and a two-RBI base hit.
Tennessee added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a safety squeeze bunt.
Missouri managed just five hits, two of them coming off the bat of Dane Opel.
Rob Zastryzny took the loss, pitching 62⁄3 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits to go along with four strikeouts and four walks.
Tennessee’s Zack Godley tossed a complete game while allowing five hits and five walks while striking out eight.
Missouri (7-11, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) and Tennessee (12-9, 2-2) play a doubleheader starting at noon today.
