Architectural and historical landmarks and monuments are now at the public's fingertips. Literally.

A deck of playing cards has been created by the Historic City of Jefferson in honor of its 30th anniversary.

Photos and information about each of the 52 buildings will make good conversation starters or collector's items.

"We wanted to do something unique and different," said Steve Veile, past president.

Choosing from among the more than 90 designated city Landmarks, as well as incorporating 20 buildings with a more statewide significance took some time, he said.

Veile said he liked the educational opportunity by putting photos and information into the hands of visitors and local residents.

"It serves several purposes," he said.

The cards went on sale at the historic preservation organization's annual meeting recently. So far, they have been well-received, Veile said.

If the cards continue to be popular, Veile said, the organization was open to a second printing, perhaps including a different collection of local landmarks.

The playing cards also serve as a fundraiser for the not-for-profit 501(c)3 Historic City of Jefferson, which recently opened its first office space.

Decks are available at Samuel's Tuxedos, and eventually they will be on sale at the organization's website, www.historiccityofjefferson.org.

Cost is $10 for the general public or $7 for members.
