Missouri wrestling tied for sixth at nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Missouri wrestling team sits in a tie for sixth place after the first day of the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.

The Tigers, who had 10 wrestlers reach the tournament, advanced seven into the second round and four into the quarterfinals.

Penn State leads with 32.5 points, while Oklahoma State is second with 29.

Alan Waters (125 pounds), Nathan McCormick (133) Drake Houdashelt (30-9) and Dominque Bradley (285) went 2-0 Thursday to advance.

Waters, the No. 1 seed at 125, picked up wins by decision against Minnesota's David Thorn (5-2) and Michigan's Sean Boyle (4-2).

McCormick defeated Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech (3-0) before taking down Dane Harlowe by a major decision.

Houdashelt defeated Penn State's Andrew Alton (4-1) before beating Dylan Ness of Minnesota 5-2.

Bradley, No. 1 at 285, knocked off Stryker Lane of Cornell by a major decision and Matthew Gibson of Iowa State (4-2).

Six Missouri wrestlers are alive in consolation rounds. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set for today.
