Lincoln softball takes pair from William Jewell

A pair of home runs went a long way for the Lincoln softball team Wednesday afternoon.

Homers from Shantae Duren and Clair Lorenz lifted the Blue Tigers to a sweep of William Jewell, winning the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 4-2.

Lincoln fell behind 1-0 in the opener after a pair of doubles plated a run for William Jewell in the top of the first.

Duren then stepped up and launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to provide all the offense Lincoln would need. Erin Sommerer led of the inning with a double before Duren’s one-out shot to right-center.

Lincoln added another run in the bottom of the third. Haley Bartow led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a failed pickoff attempt with Lauren McMinn at the plate.

Duren’s homer was one of her two hits for the game.

Lorenz picked up the win to improve to 7-1 on the season, tossing seven innings and allowing one run on seven hits to go along with 10 strikeouts.

Lincoln had to overcome another 1-0 deficit in the nightcap.

After William Jewell took the lead in the top of the third on a triple and a run-scoring single, Lorenz knotted the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth.

Lincoln took the lead later in the frame one a two-run single from Brianna Akers. Lorenz added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 4-1.

William Jewell got one back in the seventh, but that’s as close as it would get.

Lorenz and Sam Kircher both tallied two hits for Lincoln.

Starr McLeod notched the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. She tossed seven innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Lincoln (9-4-1) faces Northern State on Friday in the Missouri Western State University Invitational.
