Truman sites close, reduce hours because of cuts

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - Automatic federal budget cuts mean visitors will have fewer opportunities to see sites connected to President Harry S. Truman.

The National Parks Services says beginning March 24, Truman's House in Independence will be closed on Sundays, Mondays and all federal holidays.

Also, the Noland Home, a house across from Truman's home that once belonged to his cousins, will be closed. And the Truman Farm in Grandview will no longer provide tours in the summer, although the grounds will be open to visitors.

The changes are part of $85 billion in across-the-board federal spending cuts that went into effect March 1.

The Independence Examiner reports (http://bit.ly/16wPFi9 ) that Larry Villalva, superintendent of the Truman National Historic Site, says he's not sure if the Noland Home or the Truman Farm will ever reopen.
