Mo. House panel completes work on budget

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri’s House Budget Committee has finished writing a proposed state spending plan for the fiscal year that starts in July.

The panel on Wednesday approved the 13 separate bills that make up the roughly $24 billion operating budget. The full House plans to tackle the budget after returning March 25 from a break that starts Thursday.

The Republican-led committee rejected two major proposals that Democratic Gov. Gov. Jay Nixon had included in his budget plan, including $900 million to expand Medicaid to 260,000 Missouri adults.

It also left out Nixon’s recommendation to distribute a funding increase to public universities based on whether they met certain performance goals. The institutions would still get an increase of roughly $20 million over last year’s appropriation.
