Schwartze resigning as public works director

Jefferson City Public Works Director Roger Schwartze has decided to resign from his post in the midst of a $1.68 million budget shortfall.

Schwartze said Tuesday that he had decided to step down because of the city’s financial troubles.

“Obviously the city’s got a severe budget crisis,” Schwartze said. “We may not be able to avoid layoffs, so I’m starting with myself.”

Schwartze said he is not eligible to partake in the city’s early retirement program, which provides incentives for employees to retire. It is unclear whether Schwartze’s position will be filled after he leaves. The city is discussing a hiring freeze to last until the end of fiscal year 2014 and Schwartze’s position may remain open until then.

“I’ve certainly enjoyed working for the city,” Schwartze said. “It’s a tough budget situation. I’m just trying to help them out.”

Roger Schwartze is a fine public servant and i feel bad that he has decided to do this. i would trust his judgement even over my own. It is a sad day for JC!
