LU women finish just shy of national title

Lewis takes men's 60-meter dash title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Lincoln women's track and field team was close to another national title.

The Blue Tigers finished in second place at Saturday's Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships, coming up just shy of their fifth national title.

Academy of Art (Calif.) won the title with 59 points. Lincoln finished with 48.5 points. Grand Canyon (Ariz.) was third with 45 points.

The Blue Tigers won two events and finished with nine All-Americans.

Latoya King picked up a title in the 60-meter dash (7.38) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Donna-Lee Hylton, Yanique Haye, Lovan Palmer and Michelle Cumberbatch also took first place with a time of 3:40.07.

King, Hylton and Haye picked up multiple All-American honors.

King took third place in the 200-meter dash (23.46). Hylton and Haye both placed in the 400-meter dash with Hylton taking fourth (54.60) and Haye finishing fifth (54.75).

Other All-American performances for Lincoln included Danielle Newman's seventh-place performance in the triple jump (12.32 meters). Sheri Kaye Campbell finished tied four fourth in the high jump (1.73 meters).

Anna-Kay James took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.37) and Twishana Williams was seventh in the mile (4:51.70).

It is the third time in school history the Blue Tigers have taken second place.

Romel Lewis has been in this situation before.

The Lincoln runner won his second straight national title with a victory in the 60-meter dash (6.66). His performance paced the Lincoln men to a ninth-place finish as a team with 25 points.

St. Augustine (Fla.) won with 72 points. Ashland (Ohio) was second with 59 points.

Lewis also earned All-American honors in the 200-meter dash where he finished fifth with a time of 21.43.

Sabiel Anderson took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.85. He was edged out by .01 for the title.

Jermaine Blake finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 1:51.20.

Lincoln opens the outdoor season Friday in Fayette.
