TV station KRCG to be sold
Monday, March 4, 2013
KRCG-TV 13 will be sold to Sinclair Broadcast Group as part of a $370 million package deal, pending regulatory approval.
Sinclair has agreed to purchase the local CBS affiliate and 17 other television stations owned by Barrington Broadcasting Group, based in suburban Chicago.
Sinclair has also entered into an agreement to operate or provide sales services to another six stations. The 24 stations are located in 15 markets and reach 3.4 percent of the U.S. TV households.
KRCG was founded in 1955 by Betty Weldon, who named it KRCG in honor of her father, Robert C. Goshorn. Weldon also owned and published the Jefferson City News Tribune until her death in 2007.
In 1967, KRCG was sold to Mid-America Television Company, a subsidiary of Kansas City Southern Industries, and in 1985 to Price Communications. Three years later, it was sold to Mel Wheeler Inc., which sold to Barrington in 2005.
KRCG’s CEO and General Manager Jon Van Ness declined comment about the sale on Monday.

Have to agree there! KRCG is a sad excuse for a TV station. Sometimes I accidentally watch because I watch a lot of CBS. It is terrible! They actually don't have news. I hope this new company got them cheap because nobody watches them anymore. People talk about how ABC 17 covers more JC news than 13 does, and 17 is based in Columbia. The KRCG reporters and morning anchors must be the channel 8 kids who flunked out of KOMU, they are horrible. When I first came to JC KRCG was the only channel to watch, now they are the last place I would go for news. I hope Sinclair cleans house!

Cleaning out the entire News Dept at KRCG would be a very good start. They need to hire some hard core investigative reporters to dig in and expose issues. State government, legislators, governor, Callaway and Cole County, Jeff City Hall, Lincoln University, and the Chamber of Commerce all provide plenty of fodder. There is no need for them to cover Columbia for news stories.

Last Sunday evening we sat down to watch the 5:30 CBS Evening News on KRCG and instead we got a stupid informercial for 15 minutes. This happens frequently on weekends. We then turn to KMIZ to watch the national news. I don't see stupidity like this on other stations. I hope the new owners change policies like this.
