Cougars go 3-1

CONWAY, Ark. - The Columbia College Lady Cougars opened the softball season by going 3-1 in the Central Baptist University Invitational over the weekend.

On Friday, the Lady Cougars picked up a pair of victories.

In the first game, Columbia College defeated NCAA Division I school Arkansas-Pine Bluff by a 9-7 score.

Tiffany Urwiler (School of the Osage High School) started and got the win, going 62⁄3 innings. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two.

Kristin Eiken (Blair Oaks High School) had two hits for the winners, Marli Hayes (Jefferson City High School) had one hit and one RBI and Whitni Howell (Jefferson City High School) chipped in with one hit.

Columbia College then beat LSU-Alexandria 6-3 as Taylor Richter (Blair Oaks High School) threw a complete game. She scattered 10 hits and allowed three earned runs while striking out six.

Hayes had a pair of hits, while Howell had one.

On Saturday, the Lady Cougars split a pair of games, starting with a 10-0 loss to Mount Mercy in a game shortened to six innings.

Howell and Hayes had one hit each in a three-hit attack for Columbia College.

Urwiler started and took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 42⁄3 innings.

The Lady Cougars wrapped things up with an 8-5 win over William Jewell.

Richter threw a complete game, giving up just two earned runs while striking out six, to get the victory.

Howell had two hits and two RBI and Eiken scored a pair of runs.
