Alewine, Vogel named top field athletes

A former Jefferson City Lady Jay and an ex-Helias Crusader are making some noise in Warrensburg.

Erin Alewine and Brent Vogel, athletes at Central Missouri, were named the women's and men's USTFCCCA Central Region Field Athletes of the Year, it was announced Friday.

Alewine posted the best pentathlon score at the NCAA Division II level with 4,152 points, the secondhighest mark in Division II history. The juinor was the only athlete to break the 4,000-point barrier this season. She'll compete in the pentathlon, long jump and high jump at the upcoming NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Vo g e l picked up the nation's best score in the heptathlon with 5,487 points in the season-opening Doane College (Neb.) Happy Holidays Multi Event in December. It's also the fourth-best mark in Division II history. He won his second straight MIAA heptathlon title last weekend and will look for his second career national title, and first indoors, next weekend.

The championships take place March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
