Missouri barn group plans spring meeting

MEXICO, Mo. (AP) — A group dedicated to preserving and saving aging Missouri barns holds its spring meeting next month.
The Missouri Barn Alliance and Rural Network will meet March 16 at Simmons Stables in Mexico, Mo. The stable was built in 1887 and is home to the Saddlebred International Hall of Fame.
The Missouri Barn Alliance and Rural Network started in 2011 to raise money to survey and find new uses for aging barns. It also created a fund from which farmers can borrow to make repairs, and a Facebook page with photographs of old barns.
A U.S. Department of Agriculture census found that Missouri has about 36,000 barns built before 1960 — the second highest number in the country.
