A Holts Summit man and Jefferson City woman were charged Monday with second-degree murder in connection with a Sunday night shooting in Columbia that left a Jefferson City man dead.
Samuel Detrick Butler, 26, Holts Summit, and Joycelynn Renee Brown, 22, 301 Marshall St., Jefferson City, were arrested Monday, then charged in Boone County.
Butler was being held in the Boone County Jail on a $1 million, cash only bond.
Brown was being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
Police identified the victim Monday afternoon as Anthony M. Unger, 25, Jefferson City.
He was found, in a car on a parking lot, with multiple gunshot wounds.
He later was pronounced dead at a Columbia hospital.
Authorities said the shooting appeared to be drug-related.
A Columbia Police Department probable cause statement said officers were called to the Conley Road parking lot just after 11 p.m. Sunday for an assault.
Brown told authorities she gave Unger a ride to the lot so he could conduct a drug sale.
She said Unger had been in phone contact with Butler to set up a drug deal.
Brown said Unger had called her and asked her for a ride to Columbia.
She picked him up and witnessed Unger fill a large, zippered plastic bag with marijuana at his Jefferson City home, then place it under the hood of her car before they drove to Columbia.
Brown said Unger told her he was selling half a pound of marijuana for $1,400.
When she and Unger got to Columbia, he told her he was meeting “DC,” Brown told police.
She said she had known Unger for five years and had seen “DC” with Unger in the past.
Brown was shown a photograph of Butler, and she identified him as “DC.”
She said she and Unger first met Butler and two other black males at the Hy-Vee store on Conley Road.
Butler got in the vehicle with Unger and Brown, and told them to follow the car he had arrived in.
Upon seeing the two other males with Butler, Brown said Unger asked Butler, “Why didn’t you get the money from him?”
She said Butler told Unger, “No it’s cool. He’s my cousin.”
Brown, Butler and Unger followed the two unknown males to another parking lot on Conley. Once there, Butler got out of Brown’s vehicle that Unger also was in, and got into the vehicle with the two unidentified males.
Brown told police one of those men asked Unger, “Do you got the s---?” and Unger replied, “Do you got the money?”
The unknown male said he had the money, and Unger got out of his car and retrieved the package of marijuana from under the hood.
He got back into the car and showed the unknown male the marijuana.
The unknown male got into the car with Unger and displayed a handgun and told Unger, “I need you to give it to me.”
Brown said that, upon seeing the gun and hearing the demand, she got out of the car and ran away.
Brown heard several shots as she ran.
After seeing the car with the unknown males drive off, she returned to find Unger bleeding and unresponsive.
Columbia police say the investigation is ongoing and further arrests or charges are still possible.
