Two people have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a Sunday night shooting in Columbia that left a Jefferson City man dead.
Samuel D. Butler, 26, Columbia and Joycelynn Brown, 22, Jefferson City, were arrested Monday. Charges against the two were filed Tuesday.
Police identified the victim Monday afternoon as 25-year-old Anthony M. Unger of Jefferson City. Unger was found in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Authorities said the shooting appeared to be drug-related.
A Columbia Police Department probable cause statement shows officers were called to a parking lot on Conley Road just after 11 p.m., Sunday night, for an assault.
Unger was found shot to death in a car on the lot.
Brown told authorities that she gave Unger a ride to this location so he could conduct a drug sale.
Brown said Unger had been in phone contact with Butler to set up a drug deal.
Brown said she got a call from Unger asking for a ride to Columbia.
She picked him up and witnessed Unger fill a large ziplock type of bag with marijuana at his Jefferson City home and place it under the hood of her car before they drove to Columbia.
Brown said Unger told her he was selling one-half pound of marijuana for $1400.
Brown said when she and Unger got to Columbia, he told her he was meeting "DC."
Brown said she had known Unger for five years and had seen "DC" with Unger in the past.
Brown was shown a photographer of Butler and she identified him as "DC."
Brown said she and Unger first met Butler and two other black males at the Hyvee on Conley Road.
Butler got in the vehicle with Unger and Brown an told them to follow the car he had arrived in.
Upon seeing the two other males with Butler, Unger said to Butler, "Why didn't you get the money from him?"
Brown said Butler told Unger, "No it's cool. He's my cousin."
Brown, Butler and Unger followed the two unknown males to a parking lot on Conley and once there Butler got out of the vehicle Unger was in and got in the vehicle with the two unknown males.
One of the unknown males asked Unger ," Do you got the s---?" and Unger replied "Do you go the money?"
The unknown male said he had the money and Unger got out of his car and retrieved the package of marijuana from under the hood of the car.
He got back into the car and showed the unknown male the marijuana.
The unknown male got into the car with Unger and displayed a handgun and told Unger "I need you to give it to me."
Upon seeing the gun and hearing the demand, Brown exited the car and ran away.
Brown heard several shots as she ran and after seeing the car with the unknown males drive off she returned to find Unger bleeding and unresponsive.
