JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it has stepped up oversight of school bus inspectors.
A state audit being released Tuesday notes that federal authorities found in 2011 that Missouri's school bus inspection procedures were inadequate.
The new audit recommends that the patrol do a better job of identifying poor state inspection stations.
The patrol said in a written response to the audit that it's now doing more follow-up after its own spot checks turn up school bus deficiencies. The follow-ups are intended to ensure that private-sector mechanics are properly trained. The patrol said it also plans to require mechanics to get special training to handle school bus inspections.
