Johnson wins Missouri Amateur

KANSAS CITY — Joey Johnson added his name to the list of Missouri Amateur champions, and he did it in commanding fashion.
The Ozark native dominated Kearney’s Ryan Zech in Sunday’s 36-hole final, winning 7 and 6 at Blue Hills Country Club.
Zech won the first and fourth holes and Johnson won the third to put Zech 1 up after five.
But Johnson won the sixth, seventh and eighth holes, all with pars, and never looked back.
After the first 18, Johnson held a 2-up lead. Zech won the 19th hole of the day to get to within 1 down, but never got any closer.
Johnson eventually closed out the match when Zech bogeyed the par-3 12th hole, the 30th hole of the day.
Johnson, who topped 153 other players for the title, was seeded just 32nd after the first two rounds of match play. However, his closest match during all of bracket play was three different victories by 3 and 1 margins.
Other winners of the Missouri Amateur when it was hosted by Blue Hills Country Club were Robert Hodge (1916), Ted Adams (1939), Jim Black (1941), Jack House (1960), Tom Watson (1968) and Ben Godwin (2006).
Johnson is the second straight first-time winner of the Amateur and fifth in the past seven years.
