Week-long manhunt ends in Morgan County

An alert property owner noticed a broken window Friday afternoon.

The sheriff was called.

And Brian Adkison spent Friday night in the Morgan County Jail instead of on the run for a sixth night.

Adkison, 23, Columbia, had led law enforcement on a nearly week-long search in the Lake of the Ozarks area, after he was accused of kidnapping his former girlfriend Saturday, near her home in Hamilton, east of Cameron on U.S. 36 in northwest Missouri's Caldwell County.

"According to him, he just ran and ran and ran," Morgan County Deputy Sheriff Mike Nienhuis told the News Tribune on Friday evening, after Adkison was arrested inside a vacant home in the Proctor Road area.

Adkison was arrested "without incident" about 3 p.m. Friday, the sheriff's lieutenant added, "surprised" when Nienhuis found him inside that home.

"The residence was actually just purchased by people who live in the Ivy Bend area, who are fixing it up to be a rental home," Nienhuis told an early evening news conference outside the sheriff's office in Versailles, during a portion that was carried live by area television stations.

"When the female owner arrived at the house to do some work to it, she noticed a window broken out, called her husband and her husband called us.

"I went there to investigate the burglary and encountered Mr. Adkison."

Morgan County Prosecutor Dustin Dunklee's staff Friday afternoon filed a second-degree burglary charge against Adkison - a Class B felony that could result in a prison sentence of from five to 15 years.

More importantly, Nienhuis noted, Associate Circuit Judge Kevin Schehr ordered Adkison held without a bond.

"The way I look at it is, I have him, and I have a no-bond warrant," Nienhuis said, "and that means he stays here."

And the sheriff's lieutenant expects more charges.

"I think the Highway Patrol is working on either two or three watercraft thefts - two on the Morgan County side and one on the Camden County side," he explained. "But, with a no-bond warrant, I don't think there's a big push to worry about them right now."

Adkison lives on state Route PP east of Columbia.

The search for him began last weekend, after he was accused of kidnapping former girlfriend Lauren G. Crawford, 23, Hamilton, on Saturday.

Caldwell County authorities charged Adkison last Saturday with kidnapping, inflicting injury and terrorizing, and ordered he be held without bond in that case, once he was caught.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reported Crawford - a medical student at the University of Missouri's Columbia campus - called her family early Sunday and told them she was at a Columbia hospital.

Boone County officials have not yet filed any charges related to last weekend's case, according to Case.net, the state court system's online reporting system (www.courts.mo.gov/casenet).

However, Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight's staff charged Adkison last May with forcible rape, deviate sexual assault and first-degree burglary after a woman told Columbia police she had been raped early on May 4, "by an acquaintance."

Police told the Columbia Tribune that Adkison raped the victim - who wasn't identified - after she tried to get him to leave her home and he refused.

His bond in that case was set at $50,000 on May 10 - then raised last Sunday to $500,000, cash only, with the added stipulation that he have "no contact with L.C."

Adkison had been arrested May 10 on the Columbia charges when he went to the Clay County Courthouse in Liberty to appear in a first-degree "tampering with a motor vehicle" case originally filed Aug. 6, 2012. His bond in that case had been $10,000.

But the court changed the conditions of that bond on June 13.

The additional conditions included "No contact direct or indirect with alleged Victim in (the Boone County rape case) or any member of her immediate family," an order that Adkison "be placed on electronic monitoring/house arrest within 48 hours" and that he was "not to leave home except for work, meet with Probation Officer or his attorney or go to Court."

Crawford was kidnapped two days later.

Officials have not reported a connection between the change in bond conditions and the new crimes.

Adkison was supposed to make another court appearance in Liberty this past week and, when he didn't show up, the court forfeited the $10,000 bond and replaced it with a $100,000 bond.

Last November, Adkison was sentenced to five days in the Caldwell County Jail for a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated conviction for an incident last June 23.

And he was on two years unsupervised probation for a Callaway County conviction of passing a bad check last year, and on a separate Boone County conviction for stealing less than $500 in 2011.

Nienhuis said Friday: "If somebody wants to come get him for court, they can writ him out and come get him.

"But, other than that, he's staying right here."

Nienhuis also said Friday that Adkison's arrest happened because a lot of law enforcement agencies came to Morgan County to help.
