91-year-old man beaten by burglars

WAYNESVILLE (AP) - A 91-year-old man remains hospitalized several days after being severely beaten during a break-in at his south-central Missouri home.

Authorities have released few details, but Pulaski County Sheriff Ronald Long says the assault happened last week while the World War II veteran was home alone.

Several people broke in and started stealing property. The sheriff says the elderly man was beaten when he tried to stop them.

A friend found the man a short time later. He was taken to a Springfield hospital and spent several days in intensive care. The sheriff said Friday the man's condition is gradually improving.

No arrests have been made.
