St. Louis bridge closure postponed until late June

VENICE, Ill. (AP) - Commuters who use the McKinley Bridge linking St. Louis to Illinois are catching a break after officials said they'll postpone plans to shut down the Mississippi River span for repairs.

The Illinois Department of Transportation had sought to close the 103-year-old bridge this weekend. But they've pushed that back and now will begin repairs on June 29.

The repairs are expected to take a weekend.

The department says shutting down the span between northern St. Louis and Venice is necessary to clean and seal the bridge's deck.

The bridge handles about 14,000 vehicles a day.
