Your Opinion: Need for open mindedness on schools reinforced

Dear Editor:

Let me reinforce the position of News Tribune staff in its editorial "Be open minded on approach to education." The administration and school board of Jefferson City School District suffered a major defeat when its latest bond issue proposal to build a single new high school failed to get the required number of votes.

It now plans to hold more meetings with the public to share ideas about its current plans for the future, to seek community input, and to make revisions in its plans in line with what it learns from the public.

There is obvious skepticism in the community about the district's plans, as one can discover when looking at the responses to the editorial on the News Tribune website.

I believe a thoughtful approach to such skepticism is to work with the district by attending meetings it will schedule, by asking good questions, by listening carefully to the ideas of school officials and informed fellow citizens, by weighing options, and by doing what we can do to be of help as the district faces the challenge of preparing its students for their lives as citizens whose destiny it is to live in a world that is very different from the world in which we have lived.

It behooves us to follow the advice of the News Tribune. Let's keep an open mind and do our best to inform ourselves before rushing to judgment.
