Your Opinion: Consider how tax system changes shift burden

Dear Editor:

I read with a great deal of interest the letter of Beverly Martin in which she urges support of the Fair Tax.

I agree wholeheartedly that the presently existing tax code is far too complicated. It must be remembered that it became that way because thousands of special interest groups have, over the years, successfully pushed for special tax breaks for their members.

Any change in the tax system will produce winners and losers.

Retired persons, a strong voting block, will be especially hard hit by a change to fair tax idea. Most non-partisan studies of the plan conclude that it will be a shift in the tax burden to the middle class and away from the wealthiest and corporations.

I urge that individuals study closely proposals of fair taxes and see how it effects them.
