Vogel, Alewine named Scholar Athletes of the Year

NEW ORLEANS - The accolades keep rolling in for Brent Vogel and Erin Alewine.

Central Missouri's Vogel (Helias High School) and Alewine (Jefferson City High School) were named the 2013 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Indoor Field Scholar Athletes of the Year for men's and women's track and field, it was announced Wednesday.

Vogel earned his degree in biology with a 3.78 GPA and won a national title at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a Division II-record score of 5,760 in the heptathlon. This is the third Scholar Athlete of the Year award of Vogel in his decorated career, having swept the indoor and outdoor awards in 2011.

Alewine holds a 3.55 GPA in dietetics and won the indoor pentathlon title by more than 100 points in March's Indoor Championships.

Scholar Athlete of the Year awards are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships. Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tiebreaking process., and cumulative GPA is weighted as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner. Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.
